Did you leave high school early? Looking to get into a competitive post-secondary?  Have out of country credentials?

High school credit courses can provide many advantages or open the door to new opportunities in your life! For many further education options, specific high school courses are a requirement. Also, it's common that job postings in Alberta will specify a high school diploma or an equivalent for applicants.

Going back to school can be tough, but there are options to make learning accessible and fit into your day-to-day life! You can learn at your own pace, move through courses as you would have in high school or even fast track it and get your course completed as soon as possible.

Alberta Advanced Education suggests three options for Albertans:

As part of Edmonton Public Schools, upgrading through Metro Continuing Education ensures your courses are in line with Alberta curriculum and therefore eligible for Alberta post-secondary and jobs in the province! This route can give you peace of mind when exploring options in Alberta and around Canada. You will always be up-to-date with current course material which ensures your knowledge is on par with your peers.

Metro offers three ways to upgrade, each with their own advantages:

In-Class Programs move at a similar to pace to what you would find in High School but fits into evening or Saturday classes. You receive the benefit of in-person instruction while also allowing room to go about your regular routine during the weekday. This option is especially beneficial for those who have been away from school for an extended period of time. Students can learn in a mature environment from qualified, board recognized teachers. Upgrading through In-Class Programs is a great option if you’re looking for comfortable and structured instruction.

The second option for students is to enroll in a Fast Track Program. This is an intensive, fast-paced program that is best suited for students who are already familiar with the course content and have ample time to dedicate to their studies. Fast Track is a great option if you are looking to improve on a mark in a class you’ve already taken or are taking a lower level class as a prerequisite. This option allows you to get all the material and instruction of an In-Class program while moving at a quicker pace and finishing sooner. You can complete a course in just eight weeks, attending nights and weekends, while still maintaining a regular work week routine.

Metro's In-Class and Fast-Track programs are taught at our newly renovated site in Avonmore school. Professional classrooms designed specifically for adult learners will provide you with a comfortable and mature academic setting.

For both In-Class and Fast Track options, Metro even offers free tutorial assistance before classes on Monday - Thursday, 5:00 pm - 6:15 pm. Free tutoring provides students the support and resources you need to be successful.

If you’re looking for a convenient and flexible option, Self-Directed Learning is for you! With Self-Directed Learning, you have the ability to set your own pace and work independently through supplied print materials. This option allows you to complete your coursework anytime and anywhere – work remotely, on the road, from your own home or at your favourite coffee spot. Program includes access to a teacher advisor and support through scheduled tutorial hours, Mondays through Thursdays, from 5:00 pm to 6:20 pm. Self-Directed Learning at Metro is open to students 20 years of age or older on September 1 of the current school year. If you are under the age of 20, please contact Argyll Centre at 780.465.1299, or find your nearest location of The Learning Store at http://outreach.epsb.ca.

Metro offers counseling services, so if you’re not sure which upgrading option is right for you, we’re just a phone call away (780.428.1111).
